What We Do

An open resource for GMs and publishers at gaming conventions across the United States

Lurking Fears is a gaming group dedicated to bridging the gap between publishers, game masters, and players. We maintain a deep bench of professional GMs who run games at conventions and regularly gather player feedback to evaluate and improve the table experience.

If you’re a GM who wants to run games at conventions but isn’t sure how to schedule, prepare, or manage a traditional convention-style game, we can help. We provide materials, training, and coaching so you can focus on running a great game. Our group is fun, welcoming, and committed to fair play, inclusion, and creating an enjoyable experience for everyone at the table.

If you’re a publisher looking to get your game in front of players—or need organized, professional support for a popular title—we’re the team to talk to. We work closely with publishers and pair them with experienced GMs who understand the system and know how to present it in a way players will remember.

Games, Publishers, and Professional GMs

We run games from a wide range of publishers and bring together a diverse, talented pool of professional GMs.

While we have a strong presence in grimdark and horror games, we embrace all RPGs—sci-fi, fantasy, modern systems, and more. We maintain strong relationships with many publishers and fully support their games at conventions.

Our group represents a wide range of ages, genders, ethnicities, and experience levels. Whether you want to run one game or one hundred, we can support it. Our tables consistently fill quickly at conventions, so you never have to worry about player interest.

Many convention players come in with a “try before you buy” mindset. We help make sure that “try” turns into genuine excitement and long-term interest. The market is crowded, and good games deserve to be showcased well. That’s what we do.

Our Team

The Four Horsemen

Matt McCloud

Chief Event Organizer

Matt McCloud is the creator and mind (such as it is) behind Lurking Fears. Matt has been into RPGs since the ’80s, and the first games he ran included Marvel Super Heroes and Star Wars (WEG). He has been involved with both comic book and gaming conventions for over twenty years. He loves to talk games and help GMs and publishers almost as much as he loves to name drop.

If you have any general questions about the group, what we can do, and how we can help, reach out to him at Matt@lurkingfears.com.

Betty Tatum

Scheduling Coordinator

My name is Betty Tatum, and this is my origin story.

My skills were honed in a time of Hammer pants, hair bands, and Grunge. In my younger days, many hours were spent immersed in the collective imagination of a small group of like-minded individuals. As I grew older, the harsh reality of the world drove me deeper into fantasy, science fiction, and post-apocalyptic worlds. In these worlds, friendships were forged, lives were tested, and hearts were broken.

Then one day the unthinkable happened. Somehow, the skills I had developed calculating the maximum amount of equipment my character could carry, laying out feat and skill point strategies to maximize the effectiveness of a spell, or even tracking the NPC crew on my fleet of starships had transformed me into the perfect Event Scheduling Coordinator.

Today you can still find me sitting around a table slinging dice, but now convention time I’m the HBIC. If you have questions on how or when to submit games for conventions, I’m your girl. Not sure how many hours to run to get a badge or a hotel room? I’m your girl. I will guide you through the game submission process and answer your questions.

I also work with convention organizers to ensure Lurking Fears designated spaces are equipped to handle our motley crew. If you have a special request, let me know. And when the convention ends, I go back to being an ordinary chick, watching murder shows in comfy clothes.

Jonathon Myhre

Chief Gamemaster

Jonathon Myhre is the name and Mr. Dragonbane is the game. Lead as the Chief GM of Lurking Fears, overseeing the vetting of new and newer Game Masters to Lurking Fears. Dedicated to ensuring our GMs possess a profound understanding of the systems they run, I actively support them through various stages—whether crafting pre-generated characters, playtesting scenarios, or delving into the mechanics of all tabletop role-playing games I can get my hands on. Lurking Fears is synonymous with providing GMs of quality and competence.

Beyond the realm of mentorship, I immerse myself in the world of tabletop gaming, often found orchestrating forty hours of games at conventions. Why the extensive commitment? Simply put, it’s driven by a boundless passion for games and the joy of delivering immersive experiences to players. Each hour spent running games is an opportunity to introduce more players to the enchanting universe of tabletop role-playing.

With a rich decade of gaming experience under my belt, I traverse the expansive landscape of tabletop RPGs, embracing diverse systems with enthusiasm. While I continue to master new systems, my commitment goes beyond the role of a mentor—I consistently participate in games, immersing myself in the intricate webbing of the nerd life I wholeheartedly embrace. Every session I run becomes an opportunity to deepen my understanding, further fueling my unwavering passion for the vast and captivating world of tabletop gaming.

Connect with me, Mr. Dragonbane, across various social media platforms to engage with players, GMs, publishers, and fellow content creators. Let’s join the conversation and explore the realms of tabletop gaming together. Look for me as Mr. Dragonbane, or shoot me a direct message at Jonathon@lurkingfears.com.

Chris Tatum

Chief Financial Officer (CFO)

I’ve been playing TTRPGs for a few decades and consider myself a system “polyglot.” I’ve run and/or played most versions of D&D, Pathfinder, Starfinder, Call of Cthulhu, WEG Star Wars (d6), Marvel Super Heroes (FASERIP), Mayfair DC Heroes, other Star Wars games (including Saga), Toon, GURPS, Champions, Alien, Dragonbane, Vaesen, some of the Fantasy Flight Warhammer 40k games, Warhammer Fantasy, DCC, Shadowdark, Dune (the current Modiphius version AND I own a copy of the Last Unicorn book), and I’m probably missing some. Gaming is woven into every part of my life.

I’m also the healthiest nerd you’ll ever meet. When I’m not running or playing games, I run. I’m an accomplished ultra-runner with a few extreme events under my belt.
